November 9th, 2009

Vegas SignsA giant sparkling ladies shoe was one of the three neon signs lit up on 9th November 2009 along Las Vegas Boulevard North. Glistening with numerous lights the shoe was the icon of Silver Slipper Gambling Hall which was quite the host spot of the city about half century ago.

The Silver Slipper glitters with stories about Howard Hughes and Wayne Newton. Wayne Newton was known popularly as “Mr. Las Vegas”.

According to Mayor Oscar Goodman, the neon signs were turned on during a ceremony in Reed Whipple Cultural Center. Goodman commented that in 1929 the first neon was turned on in Las Vegas, and the light will be preserved.

The three signs from Neon Museum were turned on to celebrate the title of Las Vegas Boulevard as beautiful byway. Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Barlow said that despite the slump the economy is facing in recent times, these neon signs are lit up to brighten the entertainment capital of the world.

Goodman commented that this historical icon will be preserved. According to U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, she still remembers the beautiful sight of this extraordinary street when she was 12 years old..

City Manager Mr. Fretwell said that the many popular cultural institutions of Las Vegas were in the vicinity of these signs. These include the Neon Museum and the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort.

The reason behind preserving these neon signs is obvious. The neon signs signify the popular Silver Slipper Gambling Hall. These symbols are really a treasure to the residents of the locality and the Mayor wants to preserve no matter what the economic situation may be.
